Why your air conditioner is blowing warm air instead of blowing cold air

Your air conditioner is supposed to keep your home cool and comfortable. If it's not doing that, it can be frustrating. You may think there's something wrong with your AC, but there are often easy solutions to these problems. Here are some easy things that can cause an air conditioner to blow warm air instead of cold air:

Is there any air coming out of the vents?

If you have a problem with your air conditioner, the first thing to do is check if there's any cold air coming out of the vents. If there is none—and it's not just hot because you're in a room without windows—there is a problem with your AC system. The next step will be figuring out what that problem is, which we'll cover in more detail later on.

There are two basic types of problems an AC can have:

  • Compressor issues

  • Condenser issues

How full is the refrigerant?

The most important thing to remember when checking your refrigerant levels is that it is measured in pounds. If you have a 3 ton air conditioning system, then the ideal amount of refrigerant should be around 8 pounds. So if your system pressure is too low, you don't have enough refrigerant. You will need to add a few more pounds of refrigerant. If your system has too much refrigerant, then it is best to remove the excess refrigerant in order to achieve the ideal system pressure. Our techs at Euro Comfort Zone have got years of experience correcting air conditioning system pressures using our top of the line equipment.

Is the thermostat set to the correct fan setting?

If the thermostat is set to auto, the air conditioner will cycle on and off as needed. If it's on "cool," the air conditioner should stay on until you change it. This may seem like a simple fix, but it's important to check this first because your AC might not be blowing warm air due to another problem.

If changing the fan setting doesn't resolve the issue, continue troubleshooting below or give us a call to get your air conditioning up and running.

Are you using the programmable settings properly?

If your air conditioner is blowing warm air, another thing to check is whether or not you’ve set your programmable settings to the right time. If you want to be able to set a thermostat for a certain temperature at night and have it automatically change when you wake up, then make sure that this feature has been set up properly.

The same goes for setting an automatic fan speed. If you want your air conditioner’s fan speed to change to high when it gets hot outside and low when it cools down, again: make sure that this feature has been activated on your thermostat!

Is the filter clean?

It's a common misconception that an air conditioner when running properly, will clean itself. This isn't true, and in fact, you should be cleaning your filter at least once per month during the summer months. If you have pets or children who play in your home often (or if your home has pets or children that visit frequently), it may need to be cleaned more often than this. Give us a call to get your system cleaned and running like new. Psst! You can now schedule bimonthly filter/system cleaning with us by giving us a quick call!

Air conditioners are complicated, but there are some simple things you can check yourself before calling a technician.

If you want to save some money and get your A/C working yourself again, there are a few things you can check yourself before calling in a technician.

Air conditioners are complicated machines with many different parts that work together to cool your home and keep it comfortable. But don't be intimidated—you don't have to be an expert to look at these parts and figure out what's going on with your air conditioner!

Asking yourself these questions will give you confidence when talking with technicians about the problem.

Final Thoughts

The best way to get your air conditioner running at peak performance is by keeping it clean and making sure it’s properly maintained. The most common problems with AC units are dirty filters, low refrigerant levels, and faulty thermostats or wiring. If you think your air conditioner might be having problems check these things first. If none of them seem likely then give us a call to schedule a professional technician who can diagnose the source of the problem quickly and easily without much fuss.
